Low GI Value Sugar Substitute-- L-arabinose

L-arabinose, which is widely found in nature as a heteropolysaccharide in fruits and coarse grains hulls, is about half the sweetness of sucrose, has high acid and thermal stability, and is not absorbed by the human body, does not produce heat, and unlike some functional sugars, it can also undergo a merad reaction, which broadens its application in baking and other fields.

At the same time, it is a natural inhibitor of sucrase, binding to small intestinal sucrase by non-competitive inhibition, thus inhibiting the digestion and absorption of sucrose. Since it was approved as a new food ingredient in 2008, there has been continuous research on it, and there have been forums and books on the topic named after it, yet none of them have been able to make it a big hit. However, if we take a closer look at the market, we find that its product applications have started to gradually increase in the past few years.

What Are the Applications of L-arabinose ?

(1) As a sweetener to partially replace sucrose. Japan launched a healthy sugar, the composition of which is 97% sucrose and 3% L-arabinose, sold on supermarket shelves instead of white sugar, can be used for home consumption or directly in the kitchen.

(2) Functional sugar products for people with "three highs and one super". The Japanese company Unitika has developed a product named "Arabinose N", whose composition is mainly composed of 7.5 g of arabinose added to 100 g of indigestible dextrin, which can significantly suppress the rise of blood sugar in long-term consumption.

(3) Functional drinks. The Japanese company Unitika has developed an instant drink (Arabinist) containing fiber, which can be added to water, tea, and juice for drinking.

(4) Functional capsules. Capsules are usually made of L-arabinose as the main ingredient and other functional elements are added to achieve multiple health maintenance effects.

(5) Pharmaceutical intermediates. (5) arabinose can be used to synthesize arabinoxylin, arabinoxylin, D-ribose, L-ribose, deoxyribose, etc..

(6) Other: pharmaceutical excipients, fragrance synthesis, etc.
