Introduction:
Vancomycin Hydrochloride is derived from the natural compound vancomycin, which was first isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces orientalis in the 1950s. It is primarily used to treat severe bacterial infections caused by Gram-positive organisms, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Enterococcus species.
Function:
Vancomycin Hydrochloride works by interfering with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and eventual death of the bacteria. It specifically targets the D-Ala-D-Ala terminus of the peptidoglycan precursor, preventing its incorporation into the growing cell wall. This mechanism of action makes Vancomycin Hydrochloride highly effective against Gram-positive bacteria.
Application:
Treatment of Infections: Vancomycin Hydrochloride is primarily used for the treatment of serious bacterial infections that do not respond to other antibiotics. It is commonly used in the management of infections such as bloodstream infections, endocarditis, pneumonia, and bone and joint infections caused by resistant Gram-positive bacteria.
Surgical Prophylaxis: Vancomycin Hydrochloride may also be used as a prophylactic measure to prevent surgical site infections, particularly when there is a high risk of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. It is administered before surgical procedures to ensure adequate levels of the drug during the operation.
